In somatic movement it’s all about re-training the brain’s nervous system to let go of chronically tight muscles and different muscle patterns that have become habits.

Here are some ideas to help soothe the brain’s nervous system and bring calm and peace back into our lives.

  • Take a mind-body movement class. Think about taking a class that increases your inside awareness. While I’d love it if you registered for one of my online somatic movement classes, you’ll find all sorts of mind-body courses offered online that are reasonably priced and can be done in the comfort of your own home.

  • Check out the latest books and podcasts that encourage us to slow down, and take a breath. Katherine May’s Wintering, The power of rest and retreat in difficult times, is a fascinating read and perfect for these timesKrista Tippett, in her On Being podcast interviews people from all walks of life. Her podcast looks at… “What does it mean to be human? How do we want to live? And who will we be to each other?”

  • Consider taking a free online course. The Science of Wellbeing, is now available through Coursera. It started out as an in-person course at Yale University and quickly became the university’s most popular course eve. It gives some practical recommendations and tools, based on sound research, to increase happiness and become more productive.

  • Immerse yourself in nature while staying home. In the last year, there’s been an explosion of nature apps, podcasts, video channels and websites that give us a virtual view of the outdoors such as 4K Nature Relaxation YouTube channel and Smarter Travel virtual nature hikes.
